Winter rye
Cereal rye (Secale cereale)
Nutrients & rotation
Scavenges leftover N, catches winter rain as roots and leaves, outcompetes many winter weeds — excellent after a leaky fertilizer year.
Aggressive grower with allelopathic reputation — terminate early enough before corn or small seeds unless you plan a tilled stale seedbed.
In the garden
- Broadcast before heavy rain or irrigate in; establishes in cool soil.
- Mow, till shallow, or tarp before spring vegetables if residue is thick.
Timing
Late summer through fall; one of the latest safe sow windows in cold zones.
Caveats
- Allelopathy can slow direct-seeded small crops if rye regrows or residue is green — plan termination.
