Mustard (biofumigation)
Selected mustard varieties (Brassica juncea and related)
Nutrients & rotation
Dense mustard can reset weed pressure and add glucosinolate-rich tissue — research-heavy for specific pests; at home treat it as a smother crop + organic matter bump, not a guaranteed fumigation.
Chop and incorporate quickly at flowering for the classic biofumigation window — timing and moisture matter more than most backyard guides admit.
In the garden
- Follow extension recipes if targeting soil pests; generic mustard still helps as a fast cover.
- Wait the recommended replant interval before sensitive crops if you are following a strict protocol.
Timing
Spring or late-summer gaps; 6–8 weeks to full cover common.
Caveats
- Still brassicas — rotate away from broccoli, etc., on the same schedule you already use.
