Brassicas and solanums can leave beds ‘hungry’; vetch banks N and adds vines that smother winter annual weeds if established early enough.
Strong winter cover in many zones with excellent spring biomass — can become weedy if allowed to set seed.
In the garden
- Pair with rye or oats if you need erosion control on slopes.
- Terminate at early bloom for easier breakdown; late vetch is tough residue.
Timing
Early to mid-fall drill or broadcast; needs time before hard freeze to anchor.
Caveats
- Hard seed can volunteer — manage termination. Some states list related vetches as watch species; use local guidance.
